We're a Community Benefit Society!
That’s right — White Swan Music and Arts is now officially registered as a Charitable Community Benefit Society (CBS). What on earth does that mean, and why should you care? Well, believe you me — this is a massive step towards bringing the White Swan back to life.
What's a CBS?
In plain English, it means this:
We will run a crowdfund campaign to raise the cash to buy the White Swan.
But we’re owned by the community. That includes anyone who buys a share — whether they’re locals, artists, punters, footy fans, or just pub lovers who believe in the cause.
This isn’t a private business, and we’re not here to turn a profit. Every decision we make, every penny we raise, goes straight into restoring the White Swan and making it a place that serves you — the people of Charlton and beyond.
Why It Matters
Being a CBS gives us the structure and credibility to:
-
Raise money through community shares and donations
-
Apply for serious funding and grants — from the Arts Council to lottery funds
-
Get tax perks — like gift aid on donations, no stamp duty, and business rate relief
-
Show we’re serious about doing this the right way — for the long term, and for everyone
The Bigger Picture
This isn't just about reopening a pub — it's about rebuilding a community hub. A place where:
-
Local creatives can perform, exhibit, and collaborate
-
Young people can find opportunity, expression and belonging
-
CAFC fans can gather before and after games
-
Charlton locals can get back a bit of soul in their high street
-
International backers can own a slice of London heritage and see their name on a bar stool (maybe!)
The White Swan 2.0 will be more than a pub — it’ll be a community-powered centre for arts, music, and good times.
How You Can Be Part of It
Very soon, we’ll be launching our Crowdfunder — and when we do, you’ll be able to help write the next chapter of the White Swan’s story.
In the meantime, sign up to our newsletter, follow us on social, and spread the word:
The Swan is stirring.
